2006 Street Scramble at The Market – December 9Final results – all scoring has been double checked for accuracy and 23 scores have been adjusted since the award ceremony. There is still one mistake in the table below: team Metsker Maps should be listed as a Mixed team, not Corporate. Those of you who are entitled to different ribbons than you received will be mailed your ribbons the second week in January. Many thanks to Patrick for compiling results for this event. It was great fun basing Street Scramble at the Market Theatre. Alan of the Theatre staff worked the sound and lights to make the briefing and the awards quite theatrical. About 250 people actually showed up to this sold-out event. We raised $1653 for the Market Foundation during pre-registration, plus over $150 in event day contributions. It rained continuously while folks were visiting checkpoints. After offering question sheets on rain-proof paper for 18 months, this was the event at which we tried to economize by using regular paper and trusting a friend's rosy weather forecast. Thus, some people's scores were reduced significantly because they needed to deal with disintegrating question sheets, sometimes needing to return to the Market Theatre to get a new one. Our apologies and it won't happen again. Many thanks to Brian and Cameron Crawford for course design, Greg Adams for vetting, Bruce McAlister for refreshments, Lyn Smith for handling registration, Bob Reddick for heading up the scoring crew (and it was an extra tough task this time because of the wet paper), and Patrick Nuss for checking and formatting results. Thanks also to the following event-day volunteers: Brian and Cameron Crawford, Patrick Nuss, Davida Brooks, Patrick Tescher, Jana Dvorak, Anna Urbanova, Don Atkinson, Steve Frederickson, Pat Reddick, Eugene Wong, Linda Chen, and two volunteers from the Market Foundation. And a special thanks to the Market Theatre for providing a warm, dry event center. Here is a race report from team Teriyaki Donut and one from More Cowbell. Some results highlights: The top-scoring team overall was Metsker Maps, visiting all but four of the checkpoints. As our sponsor, Metsker was entitled to a free entry, and since none of their staff was available, they asked us to put together a team for them. Roger Michel of team MerGeo.com suggested Martin Buhr, not knowing that he was helping build a team that would defeat him and his partner Yumay Chang in the Mixed class (Metsker is incorrectly listed in the Corporate class below) by a solid 70 points. We had a lot more women's teams than men's this time. Top men's team and second overall was More Cowbell with 860 points. Top women's team was Czech Power, comprising our finish timers Jana Dvorak and her daughter Anna, with 730 points. As usual, the Family class had many entries. Congratulations to first place team The Oxy-Morons. This is Geoffrey Martin-Noble's last Street Scramble as part of a family team. Geoffrey had been away due to injury for most of the past year and it is good to have him back. The next four places were taken by Street Scramble regulars, all scoring very close to one another. Top Family newbie team was Isabelle-Jack Team with 440 points – great job! Team SMD was the only Junior entry. This was Chris and Brandyn's first Street Scramble. Corporate team REACH: Hi-Liters returned quite early, perhaps due to a wet question sheet, yet with a score of 610 still won by 10 points over their Boeing colleagues, REACH: Bad Guys. Among the Veteran (50+) teams, team Zola was the winning Mixed Veteran team with 710 points (tenth overall). Zola members Jack and Leslie Hamann are volleyball coaches at Garfield High. Top Veteran Women's team was Cheryl Marek with 580 points. Cheryl has joined us in years past but is usually unable to participate due to her other athletic passions; we were glad to have her with us again. And finally, top Veteran Men's team and, impressively, third overall, was solo team Enger Management with 870 points. Dave Enger usually scores impressively on bike; now we know that he can also score impressively on foot. This is the first time that we have had a participation limit for Street Scramble. The limit was due to the capacity of the Market Theatre. It was great to reach capacity, though it was hard to turn away those who did not register in time. Clearly, Pike Place Market and Seattle's downtown at Christmas time were big attractions. Thank you for helping us raise so much money for the Market Foundation. We are already planning our 2007 Street Scramble at The Market for December 8.
